Why don't we call our monthly
charges rent?
ICC Members pay monthly "charges" and not
rent because no one in the ICC is a renter, we own it!
How do I pay my charges?
You can view your balance and pay with an ACH transfer from your bank account here.
You can also give a check or money order to your house treasurer by
the 1st of each month. All checks or money orders should be
made payable to
"ICC." Make sure to have both your name
and your house name written on all your payments.
The ICC cannot process cash or credit cards
at this time. Paypal is accepted for international member's
initial share and fee payments only.
When are charges due?
Charges are due on the 1st of each month.
What if I'm late with charges?
After the 5th of the month, a late fee of $15.00 will be charged
to the ICC member whose payment has not yet arrived at the ICC
office. If a member owes more than $200 to the ICC by the 15th
of the month he/she may have eviction proceedings brought against
them, unless they have an approved payment plan.
To set up a payment plan, download the payment plan form and contact the Finance Committee. You will be asked to attend a finance committee meeting and provide documentation of your income and ability to pay your debt. You will need to know your current balance which you can find on your online account or contact finance staff.
How can I find out my house seniority
for room picks? Each house is different
so check with your house president and read your house constitution.
Traditionally among all the ICC houses, the last meeting of the
Winter semester (usually in April) is when the House picks rooms
for the following Spring term and Fall term. New members are invited
to this meeting and the House president will have a prepared seniority
list on hand for room picks after the meeting and house tour.
Each house has a set of rules in their individual constitutions
regarding room picks and seniority. Look through your house constitution
and by-laws to be sure where you fall on the list. The basic idea
is that the longer you have been in the house, the higher your
seniority is. If you move from another ICC house, some of your
seniority will stay with you and if you move in from another housing
cooperative outside of Ann Arbor some might stay with you too!
Can I reserve a space in my house for
next year?
Being an ICC member has tons of perks! One is our Homestead
policy. Homesteads are the ICC's equivalent of a reservation
system. Homestead
forms and instructions about homesteads go out to the houses
and members in October. They must be returned to the office
on or before a certain date before Fall/Winter contract signing
begins. Some other information you need to know about homesteading
in the ICC:
1. You can fill in three choices of places to homestead. If
you live at one house, you can homestead for another. If you
are on North Campus, you must homestead a specific room. If
too many people homestead for one house, that is where the second
choice comes in handy and so forth.
2. Homesteads are organized by the date they are signed and
returned to the ICC office.
3. HOMESTEADS ARE NOT SIGNED CONTRACTS. They are only reservations
and they do expire.
4. The Homestead form that you sign ensures that you have a
saved spot in the house you're homesteaded for. You have until
the Homestead expires to come into the office and sign for the
space or it will become open and advertised as available.
What do I do if I have to leave
the ICC before my contract is up?
If you have to leave the ICC for
any reason before the end of your contract period you will want
to make sure some things happen.
1. First, you should talk to your house president. If there
is something wrong with the house give them a chance to fix
it! Let the house know the dates you would be gone and the circumstances.
2. Next you should make an appointment to talk to the Director
of Member Services so the ICC office knows what's going
on. When you're at the office fill out a Replacement
Request Form for the appropriate contract period. This allows
people to know about your space if they are looking.
3. You should also start advertising to find a replacement.
4. You may also want to ask the house to be released from house
charges. To do this, ask your house president. Each house has
different rules for this.
If and when you get released from house charges, you are still
financially responsible for the ICC portion of your monthly
charges until your space has been filled. So it is in your best
interest to try to find yourself a replacement as soon as possible.
If your case is extenuating circumstances, you could submit
a request to the Contract Release Committee (CRC). Find the Contract
Release Committee Guidelines on the Policies page. You should also talk to the Member Services staff at the ICC office who can direct you in the process.
What is a house officer?
Each house has a unique set of house officers. Some
have different names for the jobs and because each house has different
needs the officer positions reflect that. The following are some
basic positions that exist and general duties. See your house
constitutions for a more detailed description.
1. House President - some houses have two presidents:
one that works with the in-house issues like rooms, officers,
house meetings and policies. The out-house president in this case
would mostly be the bridge to the organization. They would be
the voting house representation of the Board of Directors and
would sit on an ICC committee. They would be responsible for reporting
Board actions and communication between the house and the ICC.
When a house has one president they are responsible for everything
listed above.
2. Ordering Steward - all boarding houses have
a person for this job. Even some non-boarding houses have someone
in charge of ordering supplies and "guff" food for the
house. This person is responsible for working with Student
Buyer's Association and other companies to order food and
supplies for the house.
3. Maintenance Manager - often houses have more
than one officer for this position as it is a big job. The house
maintenance managers are voting members of the ICC
Maintenance Committee. Every house must be represented at
every semi-weekly meeting. These officers vote on and bring project
proposals for house improvements to the committee as well as manage
and oversee minor maintenance in the house.
4. Work Manager - responsible for assigning and
enforcing house jobs among the members of the house. The house
cleanliness and sanitation of the house is an important job for
an important officer. They also assign members to office labor
which helps keep our organization running.
5. House Treasurer - creates the house budget
and educates and reports to the house specifics regarding house
and ICC finances. They post and collect monthly charges and deliver
them to the ICC finance office. They pay all house bills including
utilities and amenities.
6. Secretary - important for house history and
record keeping. They are responsible for taking minutes or notes
during the house meeting and posting them at the house and getting
a copy for the archives at the ICC office. They are also in charge
of keeping accurate past house members addresses for the purposes
of forwarding first class mail.
7. Here are some other officer positions that exist at some houses:
Outside Maintenance/Recycler/Gardener, Kitchen Manager/Sanitation
Officer, Social Director/House Activities Officer, Technology
Manager/Nerd Czar, Guff Toter, House Massage Officer, Goodies
Chef. Does your house have a special officer?
How do I get to use the ICC services
like the truck, Education Center, office supplies/equipment or tools?
We have some cool things that you as members of the
ICC can borrow and use for both personal and house use. There
are some steps you must go through in order to take advantage
of our services.
1. Call the ICC Office (734.662.4414) to get acquainted with the
processes.
2. You need to fill out paper work if you want to use the ICC
truck, items from the tool crib, or the Education Center. At the
office you'll learn about the rules regarding the equipment and
how to use the things you want to borrow. Please refer to the
Services & Resources page for more
details on what we have for you and how to make them available
to you!
Why do we have an ICC office?
There are many things that need to get done to run our multi-million
dollar organization. We have full-time staff members to keep
us running and to let us know what members before us did. Our
part-time staff members assist in the day-to-day operations
and the positions allow some great experience for future employment.
Members doing office labor are also around to help out so we
can keep our charges down.
The office has a wealth of resources for ICC members to explore.
In addition to hosting and coordinating many of the ICC's resources
and services, the office also has a fax machine, a photocopy
machine, a scanner, a lamination machine, button maker, paper
cutter, and a postage machine that our members can use for a
small fee. You never have to bring money because we can invoice
members and the fees will get added to your monthly charges.
If there is a computer available you can use it.
We keep copies of each house's meeting minutes and old photographs.
We have loads of written records that span the earliest days
of the ICC right up to the present. We have big tables and lots
of chairs for people to hang out in. Remember, it is your office!
Just remember it is a place of business and work is going on
around you. Don't forget to clean up after yourself!

How do I get a T-Shirt or other ICC stuff?
The best way that the ICC can advertise for itself is for us
to do it together! Check out our current merchandise
here or come to the office and pick out a t-shirt, sweatshirt,
a hat, water bottle, button, or some stickers. T-shirts are
$11.00, sweatshirts and track jackets are $17.00 and you
don't even have to pay for it right away. Just ask the Member
Services Staff to put it on your account. We also have water
bottles, baseball caps, knit hats, stickers, and buttons.
If you don't see a t-shirt you like or you have a great idea
for other ICC merchandise by contacting the Recruitment
Committee. Maybe you can help design the next ICC t-shirt
we print.
Wear your co-op gear and let people know how much you love your
co-op!
I heard we can
save money on our taxes. How do I get the Homestead Property Tax
credit?
Check out this letter

Tell
me about ICC office labor.
Each ICC House owes one hour per week for every three rooming
members in the house during Fall/Winter and one hour per week
for every four rooming members in the house during Spring/Summer.
Houses are supposed to let the office know (by email or phone)
who is assigned to ICC office labor by the second week of the
term.
Work Managers(WM). Within the first week of each term, the WM should assign enough
house members to ICC office labor (or to specific jobs) to cover
the required hours per week. Check out the ICC office labor
positions flier for help assigning jobs. Please do not assign
seven people one hour each. It's not useful to the members or
to the staff or committees. Let each member know how many hours
a week is required of them and if they should do a certain job.
Let the ICC office know by the second week of the term who is
assigned to labor and how many hours per week they owe.
Make
sure your house members contact the appropriate staff person
or the ICC President
to sign up *ahead* of time for their new job. When they
do their office work or attend committee/team meetings, they need to make sure
their hours are recorded on the sign-in sheets for weekly reports.
House officers will get a report emailed to them which they
should check for accuracy and follow up with the members assigned
to work to make sure they are doing their job and also signing
in each week. At the end of the term any unworked hours are
turned into fines ($15/hour) and assessed to the house. The
work manager can assign these fines to individual members for
missed work by completing an Additional Charges worksheet and
submitting it to your house treasurer, who should turn it into
the ICC Director of Financial Services by the end of the month.
Members. If you are interested in ICC office labor, you need to do the following:
1. Let your Work Manager (WM) know you are interested in doing ICC office labor AND find out from your WM how many hours per week you will owe.
2. Check out the ICC office labor
positions flier. A current, more up-to-date version will be available through your Work Manager or in the ICC office.
3.Each member assigned to or wanting to do office labor needs to come into the
ICC office to fill out an ICC/Office
labor sign up sheet by the second week of the term. For any positions
that you rank as a "1" (highly preferred) the supervisor
of that area will get a copy of your sign-up sheet. You are
responsible for contacting the supervisors of the positions
in which you are interested. They should also contact you, but
please be patient as there are only 8 full-time staff members
and one ICC president but hundreds of ICC members!
4. Make sure you contact the Work Manager to confirm your job choice, so you can be formally assigned to this job and receive the necessary work credit.
5.Remeber to record your worked hours on the office sign-in sheets, which you can find directly across form the Member Services front desk

How can I forward
my mail when I leave the ICC?
The US Postal Service classifies the ICC as a group dwelling,
like a residence hall, and so does *not* forward mail from our
addresses. The ICC doesn't forward mail either. You are responsible
for contacting the individuals and organizations who send you
mail and update your address with them. You should also leave
your forwarding address with your house president, secretary,
or keyholder and any other house officers who handle the mail.
You could leave envelopes and stamps so that they can forward
it to you for a certain period of time, usually no more than
4 months. You could also ask them to hold your mail for that
time too if you are able to come back to pick it up.
What do I do if I feel that there is prejudice or discrimination happening in my house?
Concerned with prejudicial or discriminatory behavior (classism,
racism, homophobia, sexism, etc.) in your house or the ICC? Contact the Diversity Committee for these or related issues at
icc.discriminationcomplaint@umich.edu.
