Welcome to Harold Osterweil House!

Osterweil was the third house purchased by the recently incorporated ICC. The first residents were men during the summer of 1946, but in the fall of 1946 Osterweil became a women's house. At the time of its purchase, all new student housing had to be approved by the University (students were legally considered minors back then). Because the ICC moved so fast in its expansion, that the University was not asked for approval until after the house was already purchased. Osterweil may have been the first house that the University granted approval for retroactively.

In 1954, Osterweil became a house strictly for female graduate students. Marge Piercy, the well known poet, playwright, and novelist, lived in Osterweil in 1956 and served on the ICC Personel (later called Membership) Committee. The house became co-ed in 1970. Osterweil is the Westernmost co-op in the ICC, it is located a couple blocks from campus and walking distance from downtown Ann Arbor.

Enter our front doors and the first thing you will see is our lobby and a place to hang your coat when you get home. Our lobby is also outfitted with a shoe rack and mail cubbies for each of our members. From our lobby, you can enter our warm and inviting living room. A great place to socialize with house members and to hold late night discussions about anything, and everything!
Our living room comes with a piano and a library of vinyl records, to be used with... ...our record player! Our dining room offers plenty of space for our 12 members to eat together at night and our windows bring in plenty of light during the day.
Our kitchen is split into two rooms. The first offers our members space to prepare their food. The second room allows house members to cook their meals and to wash their dishes thereafter. Our large stove allows for multiple meals to be cooked simultaneously. We also provide every spice avaiable to ensure your dishes taste delicious!
Two huge refrigerators for 12 people means lots of food for our house members! Osterweil has three floors. On the second and third floors are our rooms. Here is a picture of an example of how our rooms are laid out. Here is an example of one of our double rooms.
Our bathrooms are kept in clean and sanitary conditions. We have our own washer and dryer in our basement. No coin opperated machines for us! And last but not least, our amazing porch allows our members to soak up the sun during the spring, summer and fall months.
