Nestled in the tree lined tip of the North State Street area, the home now known as King House has provided a unique cooperative experience for over 50 years. King House is currently the ICC’s only apartment style cooperative. One current member thinks of living in King as training for owning your own home. When living here, you learn things like how to fix a door lock or electrical outlet while still having the support of the ICC maintenance infrastructure. It is like getting the benefits of having your own place and being in the co-op system all rolled into one. Because of the many advantages of living in King, there is typically a waitlist for apartments. Some think of King as a little paradise to reward good co-opers.

There are several different types of apartments that house either one or two co-opers. One person can even live in a 2 bedroom apartment by him or herself. Members can cook on their own or become boarders at one of the nearby boarding co-ops. House labor is minimal compared to other co-ops, although people are responsible for the upkeep of their own living space.

Due to the high demand for apartments, members can stay in King House for a maximum of three years. During this time, they may switch apartments when openings occur. This system provides a comfortable tenure for current members while keeping openings in King House frequent enough to be an incentive for co-opers in other houses.

In addition to being a great house to live in, King House also has a very desirable location. The North State Street area is sometimes called ‘’the grad student ghetto’’ because of high proportion of shall we say, more mature, students in the neighborhood. The fact that the Graduate School is nearby probably has something to do with this. It is still a young and vibrant area of town where you will see people hanging out on porches and walking to house parties on weekends, but it tends to be much cleaner and quieter than the neighborhoods south of campus.

Area_Map
The red pointer on the map above shows where we are located. King House is just four short blocks from Central Campus (and right next to the nursing school) and is a short walk from Kerrytown, the Medical Center, the Arb, the vibrant State and Liberty college-town area and even the ritzy Main St. area downtown. You can easily walk to numerous restaurants, bookstores, coffee houses, shops, and the Michigan and State theatres. There are also many churches of several denominations close by for the more pious co-opers.
Kitchen
No more industrial sized kitchens, no more wondering whether or not something is guff

Yes, this is a co-op.

The view from the back porch. Several apartments have convenient entrances on the back side of the house in addition to a front door.

Another view of the back yard. You can see why Ann Arbor is called "tree town."

We have an active garden and compost.

The view to the West.
Sunset
One of the many beautiful sunsets.
Zeeb Burton_tower
Zeeb the cat. There are currently four cats and one dog living in King. King is close enough for residents to hear the chimes in Burton Tower. This photo was taken around the corner.
